March 6, 2012

Dalton State sign agreement with Korea TechDr. Martin Cochran will introduce local audiences to the euphonium in a free concert Tuesday, March 13 at Dalton State College.

Dr. Martin Cochran will perform on the euphonium at Dalton State’s Goodroe Auditorium on Tuesday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. The free concert is sponsored by Dalton State’s Office of Student Life and Department of Humanities.

The program includes compositions by Hummel, Sarasate, Debussy, and Frescobaldi.

“The euphonium, named for its beautiful, “euphonious” sound, is a smaller cousin to the tuba,” said Dr. Ellie Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Music for Dalton State. “It is commonly found playing lovely countermelodies in marches by John Philip Sousa, but in recent years has become popular as a solo instrument and is a cornerstone in the brass band movement in this country and worldwide.”

“Dr. Cochran has established an international reputation as a euphonium performer and teacher,” she said. “His extensive experience as a soloist has taken him across the country and abroad, appearing with ensembles ranging from the United States Army Orchestra to brass bands and university ensembles. Dr. Cochran has presented recitals at numerous international and regional tuba and euphonium conferences and maintains an active schedule of teaching and performing across the U.S.”

“He lived in Dalton for several years, and his wife was a teacher at City Park School,” Dr. Jenkins said. “Currently Dr. Cochran is an Instructor of Music at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he teaches euphonium.”

Dr. Cochran will be accompanied by Dr. Kris Carlisle, Associate Professor of Piano at Berry College.

The Guest Recital will begin at 7.30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall. Seating is available on a first-come, first served basis.
