Dalton State College Hosts the Balkan String Quartet

March 16, 2012

Balkan String Quartet The Balkan String Quartet will perform Thursday, March 22 in a free concert at Dalton State.

The Balkan String Quartet, a temperamental and fiery string group from Atlanta, GA, will perform at the Goodroe Auditorium on Thursday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. The free concert is sponsored by Dalton State’s Office of Student Life and Department of Humanities.

Four established chamber and solo musicians joined together and developed the Balkan Quartet, says Dr. Ellie Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Music for Dalton State. Serbian violinists Sinisa Ciric and Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric, violist Danijela Zezeji-Gualdi and Bulgarian cellist Martin Gueorguiev were drawn together by their mutual background and affinity for the energy and excitement of Balkan music. The four musicians, all in residence at Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta, GA, immediately felt a strong musical and personal connection and their commitment to reviving and preserving the unique and powerful Balkan ethno music has brought them to a wide variety of performance venues, Jenkins said.

The quartet strives to inspire composers and to collaborate with them in creating new music that elevates the rich Balkan folk heritage to the highest artistic level. The quartet’s concert programs merge works by contemporary composers with the classical string quartet repertoire, and through the musicians’ interaction with the audience create an intimate and entertaining atmosphere for the listeners.

Recent Balkan Quartet performances of note include concerts at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the Kennedy Center, as well as the GMEA Conference in Savannah, GA, and The Arts club in Washington, DC. The quartet’s performances have been broadcast on NPR, and their concert at Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage was streamed live online.

The free concert is sponsored by Dalton State’s Office of Student Life and Department of Humanities and open to the public. The guest recital will begin at 7.30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall. Seating is available on a first-come, first served basis.
