The first-ever “Roadrunner Rumble” flag football tournament to benefit the Dalton State intercollegiate athletics program was held recently at Dalton’s James Brown Park.

Eight teams, including one from North Carolina, five from the metro Atlanta area, and two from Dalton State, competed; the winning team was the former national champion Ciroc Boys from Atlanta.

The tournament was the brainchild of Dalton State student Ryan Hollingsworth who organized the event along with Garret Burgner, director of Campus Recreation, and Alex Sullins of Dalton Parks and Recreation.

“To have a student take his own initiative to put together an event as impressive as this for the benefit of athletics is really mind-blowing,” said Athletic Director Derek Waugh. “We are flattered to be the beneficiary of the hard work Ryan, Garrett, and Alex have put in; this just goes to show the great spirit of cooperation that exists between our Department of Athletics and the students of Dalton State.”

“I thought this would be a great opportunity to bring athletes from around the Southeast together to play some competitive flag football and also involve our students,” said Hollingsworth. “But mostly I thought it was a great way to raise some money for the Roadrunners.

“I really want our athletic program to grow, and I want to help any way I can,” he said. “I believe this tournament will grow and become something big for our school and our community.”

Hollingsworth hopes the Roadrunner Rumble will become a semiannual event. Those interested in participating in future Roadrunner Rumbles are invited to contact Garrett Burgner at
