Preparing to celebrate Family Literacy Week are Adult Education Program employees Sherry Burgess, Instructor; Sherry Riley, Director; and Jennifer Ross, Coordinator.

Dalton State’s Adult Education Program has planned a number of events for Family Literacy Week which will be observed Monday through Thursday at the Dalton State East campus.

“‘Literacy Involves the Whole Community’ is the theme for the week, and we are bringing in different members of the community to communicate to our students the importance of family literacy,” said Sherry Riley, Director.

“Adult Education prepares parents to be their child’s first and most important teacher,” said Riley. “Studies demonstrate the correlation between parents’ literacy and children’s success with literacy and school.”

Among the activities planned are free GED practice tests which will be offered Monday through Thursday at the Adult Education Center. Monday is also “Bring a Friend Day” when current students in the Adult Education Program are encouraged to invite a friend to class with them.

On Tuesday, America Gruner, President of the Coalition for Latino Leaders, will speak on “Literacy Connection” and will update students on new immigration policy. That program will be at 9 am.

Wednesday morning, Dalton Mayor David Pennington will address the students on “Literacy Involves the Whole Community.” In June, the mayor along with other elected officials and community leaders pledged their commitment to Readers to Leaders, a community initiative to support and encourage early literacy among all the children of Dalton and Whitfield County.

Students will cap their Literacy Week activities with a pizza party on Thursday.

The Adult Education Program serves individuals 16 years and older who need to improve their basic skills with an emphasis on literacy, math, and English language proficiency. Those who wish to know more about Literacy Week activities or the Adult Education Program are invited to contact Sherry Riley at 706-226-3761.
