Dalton native Michel Bates has been named Director of Tennis for Dalton State College. Bates, who currently operates the tennis program for Dalton Parks and Recreation, will coach men’s and women’s tennis for Dalton State beginning November 1.

Dalton State’s tennis program will be based at Lakeshore Park, a venue that Athletic Director Derek Waugh says “will be one of the finest tennis facilities in the NAIA.”

Coach Bates is widely considered one of the finest tennis players ever to pick up a racket in Dalton. She was a nationally-ranked junior player under Coach Bill Tym and is the only tennis player in the history of Dalton High School to win a state championship, in 1980.

From there, she competed four years at Auburn University where she was an All-SEC and honorable mention All-American performer in both her junior and senior years before launching a professional career on the USTA Satellite Tour.

In her current role, she oversees a tennis program with more than 80 students, and she has built numerous junior programs from the ground up. She runs tournaments and charity events for the City of Dalton and the USTA which attract thousands of participants.

“We are extremely excited to have Michel lead our tennis program,” said Waugh. “She is not only a great player and teacher of the game, but I know she is excited to start recruiting, and her goal is the same as ours: to have one of the most competitive tennis programs in the country.”

“I have no doubt that with her expertise, contacts and personality, she will be a great coach and she and her teams will be great representatives of our intercollegiate athletic department,” he said.

“I am extremely excited about this opportunity for the institution and the community to add college athletics in this area and specifically, our tennis program,” said Bates. “I look forward to building a top-notch, first class program that represents Dalton State and this great community the way it deserves.”
