Margie Bruner has been named cross country coach at Dalton State. Coach Bruner, who will begin the position in a volunteer capacity, will be joined by a Director of Cross Country who will also serve as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team starting in 2013; that position has yet to be filled.

“Coach Bruner is the new coach at Dalton State, but she is very familiar with the institution and with running in Northwest Georgia,” said Athletic Director Derek Waugh. “Coach Bruner has been coaching at Dalton High School for over a decade and she is actively involved in the Carpet Capital Running Club.”

“She comes with very high recommendations and her name is synonymous with running in this area,” Waugh said. “We could not be happier to have her join our young athletic department. She is not only a great runner and coach, but she is also an outstanding individual who I am proud to have represent our department.”

Bruner was a Cross Country and Track and Field athlete in the SEC at Auburn University where she earned her degree in Business Administration. She went on to earn her master’s degree in Clinical and School Psychology from Middle Tennessee State and Education Specialist degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

In addition to an extensive running background, Coach Bruner has also taught at both the high school and the collegiate levels. She has served on the faculty at Dalton State where she has taught First Year Experience and psychology classes. In 2011, she was nominated for the Tom Jones Educator of the Year award for Dalton Public Schools. In addition, she has organized running programs for elementary schools all the way up to Dalton State’s Continuing Education program.

Coach Bruner and husband, Greg, also an avid runner, are honorary board members of “The Run for John” held annually each spring in memory of their son. The race committee has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to local high school students since the race was established five years ago.

“I am very excited to build a cross country program from the ground up. I have been involved in running since high school and this will be a fun challenge,” said Coach Bruner. “Dalton State College is a special place and I am thrilled to be a part of their new sports program.”

“I want to ensure that Dalton State is the destination for all of the top runners in Northwest Georgia area and beyond,” she said.
