Three Dalton area natives are getting hands-on experience in sports marketing as summer interns with the fledgling Dalton State Roadrunner athletic program. The efforts include a campaign to sell season tickets for DS basketball.

Garren Palmer and Hutton Sellers from Georgia Southern and Will Snipes from Vanderbilt have been working hard helping the DS athletic program to, among other things, develop a marketing plan.

“The men had asked for an opportunity to get their feet wet,” said DS Director of Athletics Derek Waugh. “Instead, we have let them dive head first into athletic administration.”

“I hope to assist Dalton State’s athletic department in providing a product that will make our community proud,” Palmer said. ”I have been astonished by the direction of the department. When applying for the position I had hoped to gain sports/business job experience, and the position has delivered.”

Palmer is a 2009 graduate of Dalton High where he was member of the National Honor Society and a four-year scholar athlete. He was the Daily Citizen Most Outstanding Baseball Player for 2008 and 2009, All Area baseball for three years, and All Area and All North Georgia Football in 2007 and 2008. “I know the impact sports can have on the local community,” Palmer added.

Palmer recently graduated from Georgia Southern with a Sports Management degree. He plans on beginning a Masters of Business Administration program in August. The four-year member of the Eagles baseball team was on the 2012 Southern Conference All-Tournament Team, 2012 Southern Conference All-Academic Team, and was on the SoCon Academic Honor Roll, 2009-2013. He was a member of the 2011 SoCon championship baseball team. He is the son of Cathy and Gary Palmer of Rocky Face.

“I have been passionate about sports my entire life, both as a player and a fan,” Sellers said. “As of late I have become interested in starting a career in athletic administration at either the college or the professional level,” he said. The 2012 Dalton High graduate has just completed his freshman year at Georgia Southern.

“I am getting to witness the making of an athletic program from the ground up,” said Sellers. “It’s a completely different experience from what I would get by interning at another school.” He sees the opportunity as a chance to gain experience while staying at home, help the DS athletic program grow, and to “get my foot in the door of athletic administration to help me receive opportunities in the business.”

Hutton is the son of Dawn and Scott Sellers of Dalton. He is majoring in business.

Snipes said he originally contacted Derek Waugh, Dalton State’s director of athletics, to “talk about his experience going through the process.” “That meeting helped me get off and running and make a game plan of how I wanted to attack the business,” Snipes said.

The 2013 Vanderbilt graduate would contact Waugh later about a summer internship. “I knew this would be an opportunity to get my feet wet in sports administration,” he added. “I have already learned so much and I appreciate the hands-on work that we are able to do as interns.”

After graduating in 2009 from the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Snipes continued his golfing career at Vanderbilt where he was a four-year letterman for the Commodores. He was also on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for three years. Volunteer work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tennessee earned him a place on the SEC Men’s Golf Community Service Team for two years.

As a three-year representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Snipes was “able to the administrative side of athletics”. The son of Jane and Brad Snipes of Rocky Face earned a Bachelor of Arts in Medicine, Health, and Society degree from Vanderbilt.
