Fine Arts and Lecture Series Welcomes Southern Author

September 25, 2013

Janie Dempsey WattsAuthor Janie Dempsey Watts will speak at Dalton State Thursday, Oct. 3

Dalton State College’s Fine Arts and Lecture Series welcomes Janie Dempsey Watts, author of “Moon Over Taylor’s Ridge,” on Thursday, October 3, in Goodroe Auditorium. The award-nominated Watts will present a lecture on how her upbringing in the South influences her writing, as well reading selections from her novel.

Watts’ “Moon Over Taylor Ridge” was nominated for a Georgia Author of the Year Award, a Southern Independent Bookseller Award, and was a finalist in the Augusta Literary Festival. Additionally, the novel was chosen as Catoosa County’s 2012 community-wide read.

A native of Chattanooga with strong roots in Georgia, Watts will discuss the importance of the stories her family has shared about the area’s history and about how that inspired one of the plot lines for her novel. “I like to link the feeling created by a place with the place inside a character’s heart,” Watts says. “My favorite stories are those where the sense of place, inside and out, interplays as the story unfolds.”

Her lecture, entitled “Storytelling Roots and ‘Moon Over Taylor’s Ridge,’” will be presented in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall at Dalton State College. The program begins at 7:30 pm. Seating is first-come, first-served.
