Statement from Dr. John Schwenn
President, Dalton State College

The following is a statement from Dr. John Schwenn on the announcement of his retirement from Dalton State College on December 31, 2014:

When I came to Dalton State as President, I planned to stay six to eight years; I will have been here almost seven years when I step down in December.

Much of the vision I laid out for Dalton State at my inauguration has been achieved. We have grown into the college people told me they wanted Dalton State to be. We’ve increased the number of bachelor’s degrees from six to 17, with another coming before the Board of Regents this month for approval. We’ve added residence halls. We’ve expanded our main campus north and south and west, and even east with the addition of our Gilmer County Center. We’ve added intercollegiate athletics and fine arts and theatre.

We have made improvements to our physical plant, most notably with the construction of Peeples Hall, but also with major renovations to Westcott Hall and Bandy Gym and soon our Technology Building.

Basketball games and performances on campus have connected us closer to the community, and our increasing involvement with the Archway Partnership has integrated us more fully into the community’s economic development efforts.

Judy and I love living here and intend to stay in Dalton. Since recovering from a recent illness, I am looking forward to having more time for painting and visiting with our children and grandchildren in Kansas, Minnesota, and Oregon.

I am proud to be leaving Dalton State in a strong position. I will be 65 in August, and it is time for the next chapter. My work here is done. Go Roadrunners!
