Psychology Honor Society Chartered at Dalton State

June 10, 2014

Dalton State College has chartered a chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, according to Dr. John Gulledge, faculty advisor for the new chapter.

Charter members and officers include Lilian Sanchez, President; Jose Gonzales, Vice President; Jamie Brown, Secretary; Kayla Hewitt, Treasurer; Kayla Almazon, Historian; and members Dillon Smitherman, Alyssa Wilson, Ashley Salter, Catherine Cansler, Timothy Grogan, Lakota Griffis, Luis Rodriguez, Kristen Haynes, Lisa Chitwood, and Veronica Ellison.

According to Dr. Gulledge, Psi Chi was founded in 1929, during the Ninth International Congress of Psychology at Yale University. The society’s stated purpose is to “encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship, and to advance the science of psychology.”

Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. There are more than 1,120 chapters located on college and university campuses throughout the US and around the world.

“These chapters not only recognize academic achievement by granting membership into the Society, but also sponsor programs and activities which augment and enhance the regular curriculum, offer an outlet for service to the campus and the community at large, and provide practical experience and fellowship through affiliation with the chapter,” Dr. Gulledge said.

The international organization confers regional and Society research awards, sponsors diverse programs at regional and national psychological association conventions, and publishes the Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research.

In addition, Psi Chi service projects illustrate the Society’s commitment to its mission of “student excellence, reflected in scholarly and professional growth within psychology with the ability to impact society positively,” he said.

Dalton State was recently approved by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to award the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
